This is a bit of a morbid start to my project...but I just found out that a boy from my secondary school has died from a drug overdose, and how did I know this? from facebook. Also before we started uni a girl I knew when I was little also died after giving birth to her first child, how did I know this?from facebook. Facebook is taking over the world.
This shows how technology is changing in such a short period of time, and the fact that now people are referring to facebook for news updates rather than the actual news.
Sport.
I have been thinking alot about what interests me and how technology effects and will affect it. So I was thinking about it all.
On the 6th July 1912 Don Lippincott broke the 100m world record in Stockholm with a time of 10.6.
On the 16th August 2009 Usain Bolt broke his own world record in Berlin with a time of 9.58.
Just short of a century later and the world record for the mens 100m has been reduced by a second. You may not think that is alot but in terms of the 100m.
In the mens 100m in Bejing, every single semi finalist would have literally 'smashed' the world record from 1912.
So why is this? Technology, the spikes..the fact they have spikes, the running clothing, the track itself, the stop clocks, the coaches, nutrition information, starting blocks, sport science technology, the preparation, aeroplanes (to take athletes to warm weather training) all these things have evolved, been created and have helped reduce the 100m world record.
But does this show true talent? is this 9.58 pure talent? if the atheletes in 1912 had this technology would they have been this quick?
If we took Usain Bolt back to 1912 would he have been this quick?
Or is this record just a result of improved technology?
So what is the 100m world record table a table of?
Past and present superstars? or how these athletes have responded to the new technology use human beings are creating?
I decided to think about technology in sport or the lack of it..
This is from the 2010 world cup with England. I dont think anyone into sport...or like my dad just likes to complain about how every country is against us English will forget this little hicup...
This shows were goal line technology is needed...the referee could look up to the big screens and see the replay of the ball bouncing across the line, however because the referee had already said it was a no goal he could not take it back. However if there was goal line technology, the referee could have been told that the ball had infact gone over the line.
HawkEye
Hawkeye, is a technology created to track a ball, it is used in tennis and cricket to make decisions more accurate than the referee decision as many games have been found to have many wrong decisions made simply because the referee cannot see properly if the ball had bounced in or out.
In 2007 Hawkeye was introduced into the Australian Tennis Open for the first time. From then on hawkeye has been used in all major championships, which has improved the game as it is more just.
