technology

5 years ago my head of year died, I found this out from phone calls being made to and from other students and teachers.
This is a bit of a morbid start to my project...but I just found out that a boy from my secondary school has died from a drug overdose, and how did I know this? from facebook.  Also before we started uni a girl I knew when I was little also died after giving birth to her first child, how did I know this?from facebook. Facebook is taking over the world.
This shows how technology is changing in such a short period of time, and the fact that now people are referring to facebook for news updates rather than the actual news.

 Sport.
I have been thinking alot about what interests me and how technology effects and will affect it. So I was thinking about it all.
On the 6th July 1912 Don Lippincott broke the 100m world record in Stockholm with a time of 10.6.
On the 16th August 2009 Usain Bolt broke his own world record in Berlin with a time of 9.58.
Just short of a century later and the world record for the mens 100m has been reduced by a second. You may not think that is alot but in terms of the 100m.
In the mens 100m in Bejing, every single semi finalist would have literally 'smashed' the world record from 1912.
So why is this? Technology, the spikes..the fact they have spikes, the running clothing, the track itself, the stop clocks, the coaches, nutrition information, starting blocks, sport science technology, the preparation, aeroplanes (to take athletes to warm weather training) all these things have evolved, been created and have helped reduce the 100m world record.
But does this show true talent? is this 9.58 pure talent? if the atheletes in 1912 had this technology would they have been this quick?
If we took Usain Bolt back to 1912 would he have been this quick?
Or is this record just a result of improved technology?

So what is the 100m world record table a table of?
Past and present superstars? or how these athletes have responded to the new technology use human beings are creating?

I decided to think about technology in sport or the lack of it..

This is from the 2010 world cup with England. I dont think anyone into sport...or like my dad just likes to complain about how every country is against us English will forget this little hicup...
This shows were goal line technology is needed...the referee could look up to the big screens and see the replay of the ball bouncing across the line, however because the referee had already said it was a no goal he could not take it back. However if there was goal line technology, the referee could have been told that the ball had infact gone over the line.

HawkEye
Hawkeye, is a technology created to track a ball, it is used in tennis and cricket to make decisions more accurate than the referee decision as many games have been found to have many wrong decisions made simply because the referee cannot see properly if the ball had bounced in or out.
In 2007 Hawkeye was introduced into the Australian Tennis Open for the first time. From then on hawkeye has been used in all major championships, which has improved the game as it is more just.

Hawkeye in cricket.

I decided to put some of the cakes I have made onto here...I used to do loadssss when I was at home. I havnt done any cakes this holidayy!

typocake!

okiee so my flat mate was given a brief of making a cake into typography...so he asked me to help him....it basically turned into me making it but he did grease the tins...and has offered to let me watch remember me so it is worth it...but here it is...5 HOURS this took me!

juno

I was watching juno the other night...which i have seen before and I did think it was very pointless when i watched it the first time...but maybe I have developed a sense of humour as I really enjoyed it when I watched it this time! Anywayyyyyyy...I love the combination of the sketches with the video. I also think the simple music works really well with this type of style.

bring the happy

I was walking through the corn exchange yesterday and stumbled across a campaign called 'bring the happy'. All you have to do is go along and type in a happy memory you have had in leeds. Your happy memory will be numbered then you have to put it on the map were it happened.

woodwork and metal induction

In woodwork we cut a 250 X 200mm piece of wood and were allowed to draw a object onto it to cut out. So after seeing abis beautiful dinosaur top i decided to do my own.
After a long dinner we then vaccum formed the object. I did it green then I just painted them now. I think they look quite good on top of my notice board!

Leeds lights

I went to see the lights get turned on last night...mcfly and shane ward were really good...not sure they were worth the hour and a half wait though! the fireworks definitly made up for it though.

Concepts

My campaign that I am supporting is BullyingUK by making people make BullyingUK your search engine and  yahoo will donate money every time you browse.

I now have to think of concepts to do with this:
- your money makes a difference.
-there are more consequences to bullying than you first thought.
-

someone...I don't know who has stolen my bacon :(

16.11.2010 typography

We were told in the first image to make the audience read it starting with the word one, then two, then three and then four. This was looking at typography in the sense of serifs?weight?size?case? and how your choice effects what the reader sees.

The second image was that we had to make the word four the biggest and the word one the smallest but the word one has to be the first thing the audience reads. This one was really difficult to do.I think when you look at this on a full screen does give the effect of seeing the word one first, but I feel the word three stands out more than the two.

This workshop has really really made me think about the use of type and has also made me think about stepping back and asking other people about your work.

Running in Leeds

Reportage: Leeds

Right on Track
A Guide to Running in Leeds

This is my final book, which I binded last Monday. I have done the dust jacket I just need to print it off. Overall I am very pleased with how the book has turned out. I feel it incorporated everything I wanted it too...which was the vital information about the runs you can do in Leeds, a strength of mine which is illustration, and the opportunity to try something new...or a few things in the case of this book (InDesign & Book Binding). However I still feel there are some typography issues with the book and the layout of the book is some what not right on the pages. But for a first go at a book of this size I am genuinly pleased with it.

Lynne Chapman
Lynne Chapman is a children's illustrator. Although I am not really a fan of her children's illustrations as to be honest they scare me a bit! I found her sketches she has done whilst going about her daily life quite interesting. The images themselves are very simple, but I think that is what makes them interesting. The text which accompanies the drawing really brings it to life and gives a modern, quirky feel to the rough sketch. I also admire her bravery...as strange as that sounds looking at this drawing. but I never dare draw in public. I feel that people are always judging me and that I am going to get told off for doing it!

james hunter
I was browsing the internet on different peoples blogs and I came upon a blog by James Hunter. I really liked his work. It varied alot. In particular the mini model above. I love how detailed it is...but i like

 Harriet Alice

My friend is at Northumbria uni doing graphics...I was just looking through his work on facebook when i came across this! I ABSOLUTLY love it!!!! its soo good...it looks really acturate too!
One of my other friends...who is also at Northumbria...but second year now did this in his first year. I find it really interesting...and when I looked at it a year ago I couldnt understand howit could be so accurate...but looking at it now I can see that it isnt that acurate, as the serifs on the bottom left are too big.

These illustrations were done by a boy on my foundation course. I loved his style of work. It is so simple, yet powerful at the same time!
